ROY R. THERIOT, SR.

Sam is a 1972 graduate of Abbeville High School, obtained his degree from USL in 1976, completed his teacher certification at USL in 1986, and received his Master's Degree in Administration from USL. He taught various Speech, English, and History classes at J.H. Williams Middle School and North Vermilion High School for several years. He also served as a City Councilman in 1978 and a marketing consultant for USL. Sam served his parish and our state as a Representative for 17 years, and he is presently serving as Vermilion Parish Clerk of Court. Additionally, he is an ordained Deacon at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Abbeville.

Some of the organizations in which Sam is actively involved are: Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau, Cattlemen's Association, USL Alumni Association, Chamber of Commerce, Louisiana Special Olympics, Louisiana Association of Educators, Louisiana Cattle Festival as past president, and LAFF since 1976. As a member of LAFF, he has held virtually every office in our association:
1) Board of Directors - 1976
2) Secretary/Treasurer - 1977, 1978
3) President - 1979
4) Past President - 1980 to present
5) Associate Board Member - 1985, 1986

As a past legislator, Sam sponsored and passed many laws dealing with family life, the environment, education, wildlife and fisheries, natural resources, and coastal erosion. More importantly for us, he led the way in passing numerous bills to enhance Louisiana's fairs and festivals, while protecting us by defeating bills which would hurt our industry.

Sam has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including:

1)    Grand Marshal-Gueydan Duck Festival
2)    King-La. Swine Festival
3)    Citizen of the Year-1986
4)    U.S. Jaycees Outstanding Young Man-1983

        c) La. Cattlemen's Association-1983
