Cal-Cam Board can use your help
We are having a workday at the
Calcasieu-Cameron Fair Grounds on July 14th at 8:00 A.M. in Sulphur,
LA. and are asking everyone available to
bring whatever tools they have and lend us
there carpenter ship skills to help us rebuild three buildings,
pickup trash and do some odd painting on the fair grounds to help us
get back to normal after the Hurricane Rita and a rainout last
season to keep the fair going.
Any help would be appreciated! Please pass
this on to any other LAFF board member and I feel sure the board
will feed everyone that is present for lunch.

PRESIDENT’s MESSAGE:
Greetings LAFF Friends
Mark
your calendars for next year’s convention – February 21 - 24, 2008
at the Holiday Inn Select in Baton Rouge. Jim and his committees are
working hard to make this convention a success. If you would like to
help with anything, just call Jim or let your District Director
know. I feel certain you will enjoy the convention more and we
certainly welcome your time and talent.
Our scheduled
meeting on June 16, 2007 in Breaux Bridge was very productive. We
are working on several issues to provide more support to the
membership events. Let me know of any comments that may help.
Your Queen,
Mallory, is working on a fantastic program to educate the children
of our state about Fairs and Festivals through the local schools.
Great work Mallory.
If you need help
with anything, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am proud to
serving this year as your L.A.F.F. President.
I hope to see you
soon.
In
the spirit of LAFF, sincerely
s/ Paul Magee

VICE-PRESIDENT’s MESSAGE:
LOVE PEACE LAFF
I would like to extend greetings
from the LAFF Board. We had our second board meeting for this year
on June 16. I would like to thank Byron and the entire Breaux Bridge
Crawfish Festival Board for the use of their facility for our
meeting. They also served us a delicious meal of boiled crawfish and
with all the trimmings. Mark and the crawfish association really
know how to boil those crawfish. Thanks guys.
This month we have traveled to the
Smoked Meat Festival Queens Pageant in Ville Platte. Congratulations
to all the winners. We then went to the Ms. 4th of July’s
and Lady Liberty’s Queens Pageant. Dennis and Natalie Mouton do a
lot of hard work with their pageants over a few weekends. To
everyone who had a pageant this past month, please call the Holiday
Inn Select and give them your new queen’s name and a credit card to
confirm the room for your queen. All LAFF has done is block the room
under the festival or fair’s name, each pageant director must
confirm their queens room. If the person getting this newsletter is
not the pageant director then please forward this to the person in
charge of the queen. It is very important that this is done as soon
as possible as we need to know how many rooms to keep for the
queens. The blocked rooms at the Holiday Inn Select are all booked.
There may be some rooms on the 5th floor which is the
concierge floor. The price is more, so keep calling the hotel and
check to see if there is a cancellation. We are working with the
hotel to let us know when there is a cancellation and we will let
the membership know as soon as we can. Our goal is to get as many
members in the hotel as we can. Let’s work together and this will
happen.
This year we will not have the
womanless pageant. The board has voted not to have it this year.
Equilla Victorian has come up with the idea of having a Star Search
for the Thursday night. The person or persons interested in entering
must be an active member of your organization for at least six
months to a year. There can be singing, dancing, or comedy acts.
Let’s all see what kind of talent we have in our fairs and
festivals. Please let’s have all amateurs and no professionals. We
know the professionals are great so let’s see how good the amateurs
are. The Queens are invited to the ballroom after their party to
join us. We will let them do their karaoke, then we will do some
star search and hopefully a star will be born. We will have judges
to pick a winner for the evening. Let’s all get together and have
some fun.
LOVE PEACE LAFF
s/ Jim Meaux
TREASURER’s MESSAGE:
Wow -- this has certainly been a hot and
rainy summer, so far!! But
anything is better than a hurricane, right?!
It has been a couple of
months since I last sent in my message, so
hopefully I don't repeat
myself.
Much appreciation and thanks go out to the
Patterson Cypress Sawmill
Festival for hosting the March 31 LAFF board
meeting and to the Breaux
Bridge Crawfish Festival for hosting the June
16 LAFF board meeting!
Both functions were awesome, with great food
and camaraderie enjoyed by
all! Much progress is being made in the
upcoming LAFF convention, as
well as everyday LAFF functions. Should you
like to join one of the
convention committees, please contact Vice
President Jim Meaux. I know he
would appreciate the interest and the help.
On April 1, I attended a Louisiana Pageant
Judges Association board
meeting in Carencro, at which plans for the
Extravaganza were
completed. The LPJA Extravaganza was held in
Rayne on May 6 and was very
successful. There were many vendors,
speakers, and modeling enjoyed by all.
On May 12, Neal and I, along with Natalie
Mouton, judged the
Independence Italian Festival Pageants and
were treated to an authentic Italian
meal. It was scrumptious! Thank you very
much to Linda McKinney and
her committee members for the royal treatment!
On June 3, Neal and I attended the Church Point
Buggy Festival. We
meandered through the arts and crafts and were
treated to the Luncheon,
where we ate delicious jambalaya. Thank you
very much to T.C. Cary and
Virgie Couerville for the wonderful
hospitality!
On June 9, Linda Comeaux and I, along with
Dennis and Natalie Mouton,
attended the surprise 40th wedding anniversary
party which was held for
Rob and Janet Piraro in Lake Charles. This
was indeed a great
celebration for such great people!
Should any fair/festival need any help with
judging, working a booth,
etc., please feel free to call upon either
Neal or me. We can be
reached at 337-893-6328 or at bnhoraist@cox.net.
By the way, that is our
permanent email address now.
Have a great summer,
SECRETARY’s MESSAGE:
Thanks to the Breaux Bridge Crawfish
Association for hosting the last LAFF Board meeting; while I greatly
enjoyed the crawfish I have permission to advise Mona was absolutely
the last one eating. Great job guys.

DISTRICT 3 DIRECTOR
I would like to thank the Crawfish Festival for
proving once again that District 3 Rocks. Crawfish hosted our 2nd
quarter meeting and did they do it right. Mark, Byron, Eugene and
all the ladies, this one’s for YOU! The crawfish and sides were
plentiful and “Hot”. Thanks!
Next meeting will be September 29 in Gueydan.
If all goes well, D-3 will do it again! Teal season should be well
under way and the first season spills will be in the pot. We invite
everyone to attend this quarterly meeting.
Please keep your eyes peeled for the marketing
packages. You should expect them in the near future. If you have
any questions or need more information concerning the marketing
awards, categories or any other information, please do not hesitate
to call me.
I am just starting to get around now from my
surgery. I apologize if I could not make your Festival or Fair
while I was down but I do plan on visiting some of you in the near
future. As your director, if I can be of assistance, do not
hesitate to call. I will be happy to hear your comments,
suggestions and/or complaints.

DISTRICT 5 DIRECTOR
Greetings from District 5: I wasn't able to
attend the board meeting on June 16, but I hope all is well.
I would like to announce that J.H. Martin has
taken the lead in bringing the IAFE Consumer Protection Program
Workshop to Louisiana. The workshop will be held in Baton Rouge at
the Holiday Inn Select on August 10 & 11, 2007.
It is intended to help fairs and festivals
understand enteric pathogens such as E.Coli and to provide
information on analyzing traffic flow in all animal areas (not just
petting zoos), creating signage, installing hand-wash areas and
establishing specific cleaning protocols.
This is a great opportunity for our fairs and
festivals as the liability from an E.Coli outbreak is of great
concern. If you have a livestock show, petting zoo, pony ride or
any other activity where people are in contact with animals, this
workshop is for you. We have a responsibility to protect the guests
at our events from these types of illnesses and we should have an
understanding of what procedures to take to prevent a tragedy from
occurring.
The workshop is being sponsored by the
Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry, Greater Baton Rouge
State Fair and the State Fair of Louisiana.
It will begin Friday Aug. 10th at 1:00pm until
5:00pm. Check in begins at Noon. The workshop will continue
Saturday the 11th with a Continental Breakfast at 7:30am and
conclude at Noon. Each attendee will receive a 3 ring binder with
all the details from the PowerPoint presentation, templates and the
tools to go home and work out a plan that is best for their fair or
festival. The IAFE will provide a certificate of participation to
each attendee.
There will be a registration fee of $40 to
cover the expenses of the meeting room and breaks. I encourage
everyone to attend this worthwhile opportunity to better protect
their fair or festival. Complete information will be distributed at
a later time or you can contact me at (318) 635-1361 or J.H. Martin
at (225) 906-5307.

DISTRICT 6 DIRECTOR
Hello everyone from District 6! Hope it's hot enough for you
out there! I have had so many people ask me, "Where are y'all going
on vacation this year?" But, you know every time I go to a
festival in or out of my district it feels like a mini vacation in
itself. Whether it's going to Ponchatoula, Mansura, Washington or
Bunkie; it seems I see something I have never seen before or I have
learned something about their heritage or culture I didn't know.
Hope you all enjoy your summer, your vacation and your Louisiana!
I started off June by attending the 21st annual Louisiana Corn
Festival on June 9th. And yes, they still have the best corn on the
cob in the state. The only thing wrong with the day I spent in
Bunkie was the heat! But, I can't hardly hold that against them. I
attended the Queen's reception. I watched the parade. The Queen's
float was really nice. After the parade, everyone went over to the
festival grounds for all the contest. The contest were corn
shucking, corn eating and then a race were you push the cob with you
nose. My daughter, Courtney- Jr. Teen Miss Battle of Pleasant Hill,
won 1st prize in the corn eating contest for ages 7-15. She won
$15! I think most of the corn ended up in her braces, though! The
festival had many arts-n-crafts vendors, food booths and a
carnival. There was a good crowd there, with lots of people in line
for a corn on the cob. I visited the festival hospitality room
where I got a chance to visit with some the festival
representatives.
On June 16th, I got lost trying to find our meeting place for our
LAFF quarterly meeting! And that was a lot of fun! I finally found
it. If I would have just followed the directions Byron Blanchard,
Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, gave me I would've been fine. But,
I bet Byron didn't know I CAN"T FOLLOW DIRECTIONS!! So, I apologize
again to everyone present at the meeting for arriving 30 minutes
late. Our meeting went well. We talked about plans for the
convention, the E.Coli workshop planned by J.H. Martin, Bob Odom and
Chris Giordano, revising the categories of the festival/fair awards,
approving new members and other items. In District 6, Celebration
on the Cane Festival and LA Farm Festival are new members of LAFF.
After the meeting, the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival had boiled
crawfish, sausage, potatoes, corn and drinks prepared for everyone.
Man, those were the best and the biggest crawfish I have ever
eaten. My compliments to the chef(s)! Thank y'all so much for
lunch. My son, Clay, accompanied me to the meeting. At first he
said no he really didn't want to have to ride all the way to Breaux
Bridge. But, after I told him our lunch menu, he decided his mother
didn't need to drive all that way by herself! Hmmm... wonder what
changed his mind?
I continued my travels across the state to Ponchatoula. I had
never been to Ponchatoula before. It is a great little town. Sadly
to say, we didn't get to taste any strawberries, as they are out of
season. I did get the opportunity to help in selecting the 2007
Miss Louisiana Strawberry Festival Queen. All the contestants were
all very sweet and intelligent young ladies. Christine Alexis
Dominguez was crowned Miss LA Strawberry Queen XXXVII. I apologize
if I spelled her last name incorrectly. Many thanks to Mrs.
Beverly, pageant director, and Jeff, newly elected festival
chairman, for their warm hospitality. I wish Jeff good luck with
his year as festival chairman. I look forward to seeing you all at
convention.
I ended the month in Natchitoches at the Celebration on the Cane
Beauty Pageant. Talk about a trip, I had to drive 3 whole miles to
this pageant! I didn't get lost one time! Helen Tousek and Tracey
Tousek-Harris are the directors. The festival was just approved as
a new member of LAFF. Celebration on the Cane is a Fourth of July
celebration held each year on the riverbank of Cane River Lake in
Natchitoches. I helped audit, decorate and prepare a Queen's
hospitality room. The 1st annual Miss Celebration on the Cane is
Melissa Yocum of Natchitoches. The Fourth of July celebration will
include food booths, bar-b-que cook-off, bands, fireworks and a boat
parade.
I am working on the Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival and Pageant.
The pageant will be held on September 8th. The festival will be
September 14th and 15th on the riverbank of Cane River Lake in
downtown Natchitoches.
If I can help anyone in or out of District 6 with a festival or
pageant, please let me know. If anyone has a question about
convention, give me a call. If I don't know the answer, I will do
my best to find someone who does.

DISTRICT
7 DIRECTOR
The Month of June has been rather slow in
District # 7. I had the honor of attending the Church Point Buggy
Festival Luncheon, and must say that their food was great. I was
very proud to see so many queens there to honor the new queen and
also to say farewell to the outgoing queen Kristen Abshire. I
really felt like I was still in Disney, being the beast among all
that beauty. I was further honored to be asked to judge the Wagons
and Buggies in their annual parade, which if you have not had the
opportunity to see it, you should put that on your list of things to
do next year. On June 9th I was honored to emcee the
Louisiana Catfish Pageant. It was indeed a pleasure to visit with
the gang from Catfish and to spend the evening with their lovely
outgoing Queen, Miss Courtney Souldier, and the Teen Queen Michelle
Fonseca. Both young ladies were great assets to the Catfish
Festival and were true ambassadors for their festival. I was
astounded to see some 88 Queens from throughout the state in
attendance, Courtney and Michelle, that was further proof of what a
fine job you did for the festival to have such a tremendous turnout
for your pageant. Congratulations to Miss Amanda Renee’ Dempster,
LA. Catfish Queen XXXII, The daughter of Kurt and Lydia Dempster.
Congratulations, to the new Teen Queen XII, Miss Lacey Picou. The
new Granny Catfish II is Mrs. Clarabell Dufrene.
Remember the LA. Catfish Festival will be July
13, 14, 15, 2007 at the St. Gertrude’s Church in Des Allemands.
There will be lots of Good Food, Cold Beer and Soft Drinks, along
with great music and friendly people, so plan to be there.
If you know of any Fairs or Festivals who are
not members of LAFF, please forward that information to me so that
we can try to get them to join LAFF. We can offer them the
information and networking that we all share and may be able to help
them to prosper and grow to be more successful. Also, If I can be
of assistance to your festival or fair, please call on me and I will
try to help in anyway possible.
The convention planning is moving along well,
Jim Meaux is working hard to make this coming convention another
huge success. If you have not made plans yet to attend, you should
do so quickly as time is short and the rooms in Baton Rouge are too.
s/ Warren Deemer
QUEEN of QUEEN’S
My month began Friday, June 1st when I
visited Church Point for the opening ceremonies of the Buggy
Festival. The weather was beautiful and the visitors were already
arriving to enjoy this great festival! Later that evening I stopped
by the Opelousas Spice and Music Festival held at Evangeline
Downs. I listened to spicy music by Travis Matte and visited with
their festival royalty. Both festivals were wonderful, and I can't
wait to go back next year!
I spent the rest of the weekend New Orleans
style as I visited the Greater New Orleans Floral Trail on June 2nd
and 3rd. Visiting queens were treated like royalty as we visited
the Aquarium, ate at Mulates where we learned how to Cajun dance and
later enjoyed delicious beignets. Sunday morning we attended mass
at St. Louis Cathedral and brought up the gifts before communion.
That afternoon, we were presented in Jackson Square and paraded
around the French Quarter in horse drawn carriages while throwing
carnations along the way. The weekend ended with a dinner and the
crowning of their new queen.
The following weekend, I rode in the Louisiana
Corn Festival Parade in Bunkie and decorated flip flops to represent
my title. There were many visiting queens and we all received a
quick lesson on how to shuck corn before the contest. I headed to
Des Allemands that evening for the Louisiana Catfish Pageant. We
were entertained with an opening number and dancers throughout the
competition. The night ended with Courtney Soudelier crowning her
successor, Amanda Dempster.
On June 21st, Ville Platte was my destination
for the Smoked Meat Festival where I was given the royal treatment.
The evening ended with the festival gaining three new
representatives and Aerial Gorsha crowning the 2007 Miss Viande
Boucanee.
I visited the Berry Sweet city of Ponchatoula
on June 23rd as Bridget Arceneaux crowned the Louisiana Strawberry
Queen XXXVII. It was a wonderful pageant, and I enjoyed watching
the skits performed by the contestants.
While traveling around Louisiana, I have
realized that there is a need to educate the youth of our state
about fairs and festivals. As my platform, I have created an
educational packet to help encourage the children of Louisiana to
get involved in fairs and festivals. Each new queen will receive a
copy of the packet when she is chosen and will be asked to help me
distribute it to schools in her area. Hopefully, this will help
shape the children of today become the event organizers of
tomorrow. If you would like a copy of the packet, please contact me
and I will send one to you.
Looks like July will be full of heat as well as
fairs and festivals throughout the state! I'm enjoying my travels
and would like to invite everyone to visit as many fairs and
festivals as you can before school starts!
Love, Peace and L.A.F.F.
