PRESIDENT’s MESSAGE:
Greetings LAFF
Friends
Mark your
calendars for next year’s convention – February 21 - 24, 2008 at the
Holiday Inn Select in Baton Rouge. Jim and his committees are
working hard to make this convention a success. If you would like to
help with anything, just call Jim or let your District Director
know. I feel certain you will enjoy this convention more and we
certainly welcome your time and talent.
Convention packets
and pageant information has been mailed out. If you did not receive
your packets, inform your District Directors.
Our scheduled
meeting held on September 29, 2007, in Gueydan, was very
productive. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the meeting a
success. Thanks to all the visitors that attended for their
comments. We are working on several items to enhance the
organization and support of the membership. Let me know of any
comments that may help.
Remember to
support your neighbors and your fellow LAFF members. If you need
help with anything, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am proud
to serving this year as your L.A.F.F. President.
I hope to see you
soon.
In the spirit of
LAFF, sincerely
s/ Paul Magee
VICE-PRESIDENT’s MESSAGE:
This is the start of the month of October. The
convention plans are well under way. I still need for the queen’s
directors to send in the Queens name and give the hotel a credit
card number to confirm the room for their Queen. Please do so as
soon as possible. The deadline will be here very soon and we need
to have all this information so we may continue with our convention
plans. Remember to call Amber at 225-930-0174 to make your queens
reservations. Also you may ask her if there are any rooms that have
become available. Keep trying. The convention packets have been
mailed out. We had a little trouble with the post office but after a
few trips to the post office they finally allowed Al to mail them
out. If you have not received your packet, check with the contact
person from your festival because they should have been mailed one.
If they have not gotten one, then email me and we will see about
getting one out to you. My email address is
jcmeaux@yahoo.com.
There will be a hospitality room on the 3rd
floor again this year. Mrs. T. C. Cary and Mrs. Virgie Courville
will be there to greet everyone. These two ladies do a wonderful job
all weekend long. To continue this job they are in need of donations
of food and drinks or anything you would like to donate. If there is
anything anyone would like to donate please email me or your
district director with this information. The board would like to
take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generosity.
Everyone is welcome to go visit with T. C. and Virgie and all who
help serve and prepare the food. It is really some good food and the
company isn’t bad either.
I would like to thank the Gueydan Duck Festival
Board members for their hospitality at our September meeting. They
prepared a wonderful meal for the board members and the guest in
attendance. If anyone has never attended a board meeting I would
like to invite you to see how the board works and try some great
food. Thanks Ronnie and all your board members.
LOVE
PEACE
LAFF

SECRETARY’s MESSAGE:
I want to thank all the members of the Gueydan
Duck Festival that hosted the LAFF Board meeting last month. The
hospitality, the food, the facilities were all first rate.
Please make the information in the newsletter
available to your fair/festival members. If you wish anyone else in
your event to receive the newsletter via email, please either type
or print very clearly these email addresses and send to
laffadupre@yahoo.com. Also, check the website (www.laffnet.org)
for the newsletter, updates and other member information.
If you need any help with your fair or
festival, especially in judging a pageant or other type of contest
or just needing any assistance in general, please send an e-mail to:
GOTOBUTTON BM_1_ laffadupre@yahoo.com or call me at: 985-447-4658
or write: 2402 Elizabeth Street, Thibodaux, LA 70301
DISTRICT 3 DIRECTOR
Last month, Gueydan Duck hosted the LAFF
quarterly meeting for the first time since Duck has been involved
with LAFF. I had never attended a quarterly meeting until I was
elected to the Board. This is your opportunity to be involved and
be heard. I would invite all of you to make at least one meeting
per year. These meetings are scattered throughout the State and are
held on a quarterly basis. Remember, YOU can volunteer to host the
meeting AND you can address the Board with any issues you may have.
I would like to thank John Leblanc of Fur and
Wildlife for coming to the last meeting and addressing the Board
with concerns of not only Fur and Wildlife but other area
festivals. I can relate to some of his concerns since we have had
those same concerns in the past. I hope we were able to address
those concerns positively.
One issue that is very important to all member
festivals and a major concern to John was the Board’s lack of
response after a catastrophe. We now have put procedures in place
as how to deal with disasters thanks to John. Please remember
however, this Board will not always be aware of a disaster since
many of these may be localized in nature like fires, tornados, etc.
We would also not know who suffered damage after a Hurricane for
example. The burden still lies with the individual event. That
event must contact the LAFF President as to set up a date and time
when assistance (labor and possible equipment) would be best
utilized. The District Directors would then be notified and the
Directors would call and ask other member festivals for assistance
for that particular day or time.
LAFF is basically a support group for all
member festivals. We are here to assist in any way we can including
but not limited to education and moral support but we need your help
in letting us know what you are in need of.
Reminder! All convention packages were mailed
a few weeks ago. If anyone in District 3 did not receive your
package, please let me know. Also, if you are to enter the
marketing awards, please let me know in advance so that we can get
these awards before the deadline.
If I can be of assistance to anyone, please do
not hesitate to call me.

DISTRICT 6 DIRECTOR
Hello from District 6! Hope everyone is
enjoying the nice fall weather. Sorry I didn't get to enter any
news in the last newsletter. Last month, I was very busy with the
Meat Pie Festival Pageant and Festival. I didn't know if I was
coming or going.
In August, I traveled to Pleasant Hill and
helped out with the first annual Sabine Fair & Festival Pageant.
Their first pageant went well and they will send their Queen to
compete at Queen of Queens. Their membership was approved at our
last board meeting. I visited the Sabine Parish Fair and Festival on
Friday, September 28th (Fair Day). In Sabine Parish, schools are
dismissed for "Fair Day". So, there was a really good crowd on
Friday during the day. They had a talent show, dog show, forestry
skill competitions, livestock competitions, baked goods, canning,
sewing and arts-n-craft exhibits. Lowery provided the carnival, for
the fair. There was also a rodeo, on Friday and Saturday nights.
The Meat Pie Festival Pageant was held on
September 8th. The 2007 Miss Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival is
Orelia Lawdins. She is a student at NSU and from Jennings, LA. On
September 13th, Miss Meat Pie, Orelia; T'Nincy; Miss Meat Pie
Festival, Haylee Tousek; Parade Coordinator, Scarlet Vascocu and I
all traveled to Alexandria and were guests on the morning Jambalaya
Show on KALB Channel 5 to talk about the festival. September 14th
and 15th was the Natchitoches Meat Pie Festival. I spent the
evening of the 13th and morning of the 14th getting all the vendors
set up in their correct space and getting them hooked up for
electricity. The crowd on Friday night was smaller than last years
because I used a DJ, instead of a live band. But, per the vendors,
Saturday's crowd made up for Friday night and was better than any
year before. We had a lot of arts-n-crafts/novelty vendors, more
live music; and this year we had a parade. I learned that next year
we will need more trash cans, we will need portable bathrooms on
both ends of the festival and to have live music on Friday night.
Thanks so much to my family and friends: Danny & Tammy Jones, Clay
and Courtney Yelverton, Pete and Susan Jordan and Scarlet Vascocu.
Thanks to Paul McGee, LAFF President, for coming and helping on
Saturday. Paul helped with so many things. He helped me change out
garbage bags, helped set up tables for all the contest, helped judge
the best tasting meat pie contest and helped with a food vendor who
was having electrical problems. Paul was willing to help in anyway
he could. I really appreciated his help so much. I don't know what
I would have done without all these people there to help.
Also on the same weekend was Marthaville Good
Ole Days Festival, September 14th and 15th. I did not get a chance
to attend their festival. I did hear that they had a very nice
parade with around 100 entries. They had vendors selling food and
arts-n-crafts. Saturday night they had a good crowd, with a local,
popular band performing, Jeff Rachel and 24/7. The Marthaville Good
Ole Days Festival has been going on for many years. I wish them the
best of luck with their festival next year. They were not able to
have a pageant this year, but I hear they are making plans for one
in the beginning of next year. On September 21st, I traveled to
Abbeville to judge the LA Cattle Festival Pageant on September
22nd. I was honored to be asked to help select the 2007 LA Cattle
Festival Royalty. Thanks so much to Barbara and the Cattle Festival
Association for their hospitality.
The next weekend, I traveled to Gueydan for our
quarterly LAFF meeting. Ronnie Lougon hosted the meeting. We went
over many issues concerning convention. The President of the LA Fur
& Wildlife addressed the LAFF Board with some concerns he had for
his festival. Dennis Mouton and Rob Piraro have offered to help in
updating the LAFF website. Secretary, Al Dupré, stated all the
packets for the convention have gone out. If there is a festival in
District 6 that has not received their packet, please let me know.
I can call Al and get him to mail you one or I can fax one over. If
your address has changed please get new info to Al Dupré. I will
work the Country Store in the Trade Show again this year. If you
have any items you would like to donate, please bring them with you
to convention. Thanks again to Ronnie and the Duck Festival
Association for a great lunch and their warm hospitality.
This coming weekend, October 5th & 6th is the
Robeline Heritage Festival. This is their 16th annual festival.
This year's entertainment is Highway 101. They will play on
Saturday night. I plan on attending their festival on Friday night
and then going back for the parade on Saturday. This coming weekend
is also Lecompte Pie Festival, October 5th,6th and 7th. I plan to
visit their festival on Sunday, Oct. 7th. I visited their website.
They have the most delicious looking pictures of pies on there! I
will have to travel to Lecompte to sample them for myself. This is a
tough job, but someone has to do it! I wish both towns the best of
luck with their festivals.
October 11,12 & 13th will be the Zwolle Tamale
Fiesta. They will have a kick-off tamale supper on the 11th.
Friday they will have a carnival, school day and live music.
Saturday there will be a parade, live music, contest, carnival and
food & arts-n-crafts vendors. October 13th, the LA Pecan Festival
will hold their Miss Pageant at Dry Prong Jr. High School. They
have closed the Miss division this to Grant Parish only. I wish
both associations they very best of luck with their events.
If there is anyone in my district that needs my
help either with their festival or pageant or any event, please do
not hesitate to call. If there is anyone who has questions on the
convention, please give me a call (318-352-8362) or email me
(alisa.n.yelverton.hxjo@statefarm.com). The LAFF Board is here to
help you with any problems or concerns you may have. Please do not
hesitate to take full advantage of our generosity.
Peace, Love & LAFF!

DISTRICT 7 DIRECTOR
As we enter into the fall it seems the pageant
questions are again being asked. Over the past few weeks I have
received numerous e-mails and phone calls about the LAFF pageant
rules. LAFF does not set any rules for individual pageants on the
local level. The only Guidelines that LAFF has is for the Queen of
Queen’s Pageant, ONLY. Each pageant has it’s own rules as
set forth by that individual pageant or pageant director. There is
not now, nor has there ever been, to my knowledge, ANY
pageant rules as set by LAFF, for individual pageants. It seems
that whenever someone disagrees with how a pageant is run, they want
to say “LAFF” rules should be followed, unfortunately, LAFF does
not have any. If you have a problem with any particular pageant or
pageant director, take it up with that group or individual, LAFF is
not now nor will they ever be the “Pageant Police”.
The fairs and festivals are getting into high
gear here in District 7. Orange has crowned their new Queen, and I
wish to apologize to them for not being in attendance, but I had a
death in the family and was unable to attend. I do have from very
good sources though that the pageant was a great success. Gretna
fest is now over and it too was a fantastic success. The food was
delicious I cooked gumbo all weekend for it. The entertainment was
fabulous and the crowd was unbelievable. Congrats to the Gretna
Fest group for another great success. The Gumbo Festival in Bridge
City is October 12, 13,14th, lots of good fun, great food
and great music is available for your pleasure. November 9, 10, 11th
are the dates for the Westwego Cypress Swamp Festival in Westwego;
come hungry, looking for good music and lots of fun.
Don’t forget to plan for the Convention in
February; Jim Meaux our V.P. and convention coordinator is working
hard to provide an educational and fun filled event for all in
attendance. If you would like to assist Jim in any way with this
convention, please let him know.
If I can be of assistance to you in any way in
District 7 or any other area, please contact me. I will do
everything possible to help you with your request.

QUEEN of QUEEN’S
The school year is
well under way, and Festival Season is too! I spent Labor Day
weekend in Morgan City for the
Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival! The queens were treated to
a fashion show and breakfast, toured of the “Mr. Charlie” oil rig,
and witnessed the traditional blessing of the fleet. I was able to
be a judge for the shrimp boat decorating contest! Leisha crowned
the new queen, Danielle Conrad, and I can’t wait to begin traveling
with her!
The following weekend
I traveled to Belle Chasse for the annual Plaquemines Parish Fair
and Orange Festival Pageant and Coronation. The queens spent the
day touring the city, and we decorated pottery. That night, we
watched the 2006 Orange Queen, Ashley Johnson, crown her successor.
On September 22, I
visited Bridge City and judged their
baby gumbo pageants. All of the children were adorable! The
pageant was run very well, and I look forward to returning for the
coronation of their Miss Gumbo Queen. That night I traveled to
Abbeville for the crowning of the
2007 Miss and Ms. Louisiana Cattle
Festival Queens . Jada O’Blanc was crowned by Lauren Naquin.
September 29th
marked the day of the Louisiana
Tournoi Pageant. There were a great number of contestants and
visiting queens in attendance. Brittney Reed crowned the 2007
Louisiana Tournoi Queen, Kimberly
Naquin!
October is full of
wonderful festivals and pageant all across the state! Now is a
great time to visit many events and experience the culture of
Louisiana !
